32 Cheap Ways to Decorate Your House

32 Cheap Ways to Decorate Your House from the Child at Heart Blog

There are a few things that we all have in common…we’ve gotta eat, sleep, and live somewhere.  We all want our homes to be this special, cozy place but we don’t know where to start.  We search magazines and see unattainable images of designer’s homes but I have TONS of ideas in this post that will give you fun, inexpensive ways to decorate your home of your dreams.  I share ways to use what you already have, thrift shop for your home like a pro, and cover a wall in something you really love.

Ok let’s go!

It’s ok to have empty space.  When I am decorating a room, first I clean the room really well and declutter.  If you there is something on your walls that you don’t like, take it down, patch the holes, and wait for a week or two.  I have lots of smaller empty walls that really didn’t need anything.  Empty space gives your favorite decor items room to shine.

Let go.  If you don’t like an item, donate it.  If you don’t like something now, you won’t like it tomorrow either.

Shop your own house.  Sometimes I just want a little change so I’ll move a plant into another room, move the furniture around, or I’ll move a rug.  Little changes like that can really update and change a room with $0 spent.

Paint it!  I have painted SO many things in my house that my family kinda makes fun of me for it.  When you are buying something, especially from a thrift store, think about if you like the shape of it instead of the color because the color can ALWAYS change.

Clear your table tops.  We always feel the need to fill every nook and cranny of our kitchen counter, dining tables, and coffee tables.  We don’t need stuff everywhere and that saves you $$$.  It also makes cleaning and dusting WAY faster!

Use a similar color palette throughout the entire house.  If you use a similar color scheme, it will be easier to shop your own house and move pieces from one room to another.

Make a gallery wall.  There is TONS of gallery wall inspiration on Pinterest and there is a reason for it.  They are so versatile, easy, and can fit anyone’s personality.  Use frames you already have or get some from the thrift store and paint them all one color.  I have a gallery wall in three rooms in my house and they are all different.  One goes all the way around our TV!  Use pictures and FREE printables from Pinterest to fill the frames or try some hand lettering for a favorite phrase.

Here are some examples from my house:

Decorate with plants.  If you are a crazy plant lady like me, this one is for you!  Plants can be on your night stands, hanging from your gallery walls, and hanging from the ceiling.  They add so much life to your home and purify the air too.  Here is some plant inspiration to give you some ideas.  If you are a plant killer like I used to be, buy ZZ plant, snake plant, and pothos plants and you can’t go wrong.

Photos everywhere!  I already mentioned the gallery walls but I love displaying our photos in lots of ways around the house.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE this canvas I printed with Canvas on the Cheap of my baby!  This canvas looked really great on my gallery wall shelf and their prices are VERY reasonable.

Upcycle.  I am always looking for ways to make something into something else.  This planter was made out of a POM juice bottle and here is some more upcycle planter inspiration.

Baskets!  This is the first section I go to when I’m in the thrift stores.  I collect shallow baskets and LOVE to hang them on the wall in my bedroom and hallway.  Some are deep enough to hold a plant too!  There are so many great basket wall ideas on Pinterest and you can use neutral baskets or colorful ones too!  🙂  I also use larger baskets to store our blankets, store my kid’s toys, and organize my craft closet.

Wall hangings are my new obsessions.  A DIY wall hanging can be SO easy to make and make a BIG statement in any room.  I rounded up my favorite ideas here and I have a few of these in my house.  These are SO adorable in a kid’s room but can really work anywhere.

White curtains are BEST.  We’ve all been there…you buy a crazy patterned curtain that you LOVE and six months later, you’re tired of them.  I learned after years of crazy patterns to just buy cheap, white IKEA curtains online and I haven’t replaced them yet.  They go with everything I do in a room and can be bleached if they get dirty.  I added black pom poms to these and LOVE how they turned out!

IKEA hacks!  If you don’t know what this is, people take a basic piece from IKEA and make it better or different in some way.  My desk I’m sitting at right now was and IKEA Rast dresser hack.  I stained the drawers of two dressers, cut a wooden top for it, painted it white, and added gold pulls.  Pinterest is FULL of creative ways to make cheap furniture AMAZING!

Your kid’s art!  Hang a dowel or copper pipe like I did, tie on some rope, add a few clothes pins and you have a gallery for your child’s art!  My son loves changing out his art and he can do it himself.  This is in our hall and I love walking past it.  🙂

Dream catcher wall.  I made this massive dream catcher wall for my daughter’s room and I still love it.  It was SO cheap and easy to make.  This would even look great over a couch or a master bed if you update the colors.

White bedding too.  I only use white bedding (even in the kid’s rooms) and I LOVE it.  It allows me to just change up a pillow or blanket to change the colors or mood instead of needing to go buy an all new bedding set to change up a room.  I buy my bedding from HomeGoods and it’s never too much.  It’s great because it can be bleached too if you kid’s decide to eat Cheetos in bed!  True story…

Hang a flag.  The focal point of my son’s room is this old 48 star USA flag and he loves it.  Just hang any state flag or the US one for a fun element in a kid’s room.

Decorate with a blanket ladder.  I made this DIY blanket ladder a few years ago and it was a great way to display my favorite blankets and store them too!  Here are some other ladder ideas too!

Engineer prints.  I discovered these a few years ago but I still love the idea.  Take a great black and white photo of your kid, dog, or family to FEDEX office and ask to print it on their huge engineer printer.  It’s costs about $5 and you get this HUGE copy of the photo.  You can just tape it to the wall or frame it in an inexpensive poster frame.  In our old house below, I took an engineer print of Cole jumping in puddles.  I hung it by taping it to a dowel and adding yarn tassels for color.

Statement walls!  When I was a kid, statement walls just meant a different color on one wall.  Now, it means cute patterns, really fun wallpaper, and so much more.  Here is one that I REALLY love!

This statement wall was done with crossing black washi tape and it looks SO cute!

Rugs on the wall.  Hang a beautiful rug on the wall for a great statement.  You can also attach it to a dowel or copper pipe for a unique wall hanging.  Sometimes rugs can be pricey but check thrift stores and especially eBay.  They have so many that are less than $20!
